Miss World SA contestant brings the sparkle

EVERY DAY is Mandela Day at Mr Price Foundation – and we’re always pleased to be joined by enthusiastic volunteers who want to donate their skills or time to change tomorrow.

One such volunteer is Miss World SA contestant Michelle Mbhamali. Michelle recently joined our team when we painted a classroom at Vukuziphathe Primary School in Hammarsdale – and at an International Coffee Day donor activation at Mr Price Group in Durban.

A value chain coordinator at Sheet Street, Michelle is also contributing to youth development by mentoring an amazing intern in our JumpStart Professional Retail Programme.

We thank Michelle for bringing her sparkle and for using her beauty for a purpose.

Michelle says that of all Mr Price Foundation’s programmes, it is our EduRise programme that resonates most strongly with her. “Education is one of the fundamentals of economic growth. Gaps in the education system contribute to the lack of skills in our country which is ultimately the cause of the high unemployment rate. My strategy is to tackle education as a starting point.”

Michelle is founder of “A Little More”, a social outreach campaign to help youth from disadvantaged communities access education facilities and resources. “We embarked on a stationery drive which was successful but we’re most proud of our second current project – a book drive to help a high school in Clermont start a mini-library.”

Michelle’s desire to make a difference stems from her own childhood.

“Being a product of empowerment myself, I understand what a small contribution can do for an individual who finds themselves on the disadvantaged side of life. I believe in paying it forward and redefining the circle of impact.”

Michelle, who is also known as Luyanda, will take to the stage at the Miss World South Africa Finale at Pretoria State Theatre on 28 October, to be televised on SABC 3 and the Africa channel. We wish Michelle the best of luck and hope she shines as brightly on the stage as she does in life.
