THE JUMPSTART CHALLENGE entered its final weekend on Friday, with an awesome 6am coffee run along the Durban beachfront. An upbeat group of runners and cyclists cruised along the promenade in an early morning show of support for the JumpStart skills development programme.
The group of local sports heroes and Challenge partners included Mr Price Sport Maxed Elite runners Shepherd Chitake, Faith Magwati and Smangele Ndlovu; The Keto Surfer Dino Giovannoni, youth sports coach Chiara Benati, and SA Rugby Legend Jeremy Thomson.
City Logistics and SPAR continued to push for the Challenge. Cyclists riding for change in SPAR’s red kit included Rael Lurie, Paul Mindry and Dean Edwards.
SA para-surfer David Williams put down his surfboard to complete a 15km ride in a low-slung three-wheeled hand-cycle, with a JumpStart flag fluttering in his wake.
“It was epic. We all just clicked immediately. Our visions and goals are so aligned. There was a great vibe on the promenade. Everybody was waving and smiling,” said Williams.
The double-amputee said that while it’s easy to complain about problems like mass youth unemployment, JumpStart makes it easy be part of the solution.
“Skills development programmes like JumpStart help the economy. They help people improve themselves and their lives; and ease homelessness and starvation. So make your choice: and if you’re not going to try make a difference, then don’t complain.”
The Challenge ends at midnight on Sunday 20 March. Plan your own virtual Challenge with friends and make your weekend coffee run count!
