MRP Foundation’s resident barista, Fikile (Fiks) Khuzwayo, recently spent some time delving deeper into the world of coffee with Craig Charity, former SA barista champ.

It was a week full of training and honing the craft, including learning more about roasting and flavour profiling. Part of her training at Lineage Coffee included interacting with and serving customers, an important tool for her growth as a barista.

Her dream of becoming a barista was ignited when she worked as a waitress in a popular cafe almost ten years ago, and through training and support, is now the face of Foundation Coffee at the Mr Price Group Support Centre. A large part of the success of the Foundation Coffee bar at the Refuel Canteen has been thanks to her excellent repertoire with staff.

“Coffee is my passion: I love coffee; I love people. In the beginning I wasn’t sure that I wanted to be part of the coffee industry but now I believe that coffee can take you places. I am looking forward to learning more and more about coffee.”

Currently, Fiks is busy preparing for the upcoming SCASA KZN Regional Barista Champs. She competed in her first regionals in 2016 and impressed the judges with her skills and infectious personality, an impressive achievement for a first time competitor. She also flew the female flag high as one of the few women at the event.

With Fiks’ passion to learn and grasp more about the industry, there is no knowing what she’ll achieve.

Foundation Coffee

From farm to cup, every part of the coffee chain matters. That’s why MRP Foundation and Together We Do Good have partnered with former SA Barista, Craig Charity, to produce a high-quality coffee that’s ethically sourced. With 100% of the proceeds from Foundation Coffee going into MRP Foundation’s education and skills development programmes, our coffee is helping to break the cycle of poverty and inequality in South Africa.

R1 from every cup of coffee, prepared by Fiks at the Mr Price Group Support Centre, goes to MRP Foundation.
